I know I share lots of songs with you; the link to the latest YouTube video is below. But this is just perfect for such a time as this, as the saying goes. One of the reasons I love this song so much is because it’s based on the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. (Words below the lyrics to the song.) I have a devotion to Francis, a man whose name, like St. Peter, was not a person’s name until it was bestowed upon him. For Peter the honor came from Jesus. For Francis, it was his earthly Father’s doing. Francis is the personification of following the will of the Triune God after his conversion. He followed Jesus so closely that he bore the wounds of Christ in his own mortal body. I recommend reading his life story. You can find a brief biography here. And that brings us to the prayer of St. Francis.
Let this be our prayer. People of faith, who believe that there is a God who loves us, each one of us, need to pray this prayer and wait upon the Lord to give us the grace to live this way. It cannot be done any other way.
We are all broken, but when you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you, that only lets God’s Light shine through. And it will touch those around you. Don’t deny the brokenness. Don’t say you are not perfect so you can’t stand up to hatred. You don’t have to be perfect; you just have to follow our Leader who showed us how to love. It is selfless, it is fearless, and only Jesus shows us how and walks with us on our own Via Dolorosas. Only Jesus left us the Holy Spirit that we must breathe in and breathe out again onto the world around us. Don’t worry about ever running out of the Holy Spirit’s love. You can’t. Our Infinite God is love and so the supply is never-ending….
Instrument
Where there’s injury, let forgiveness be enough
Are we giving up, fighting the good fight
Where there is despair, just a flicker in the flame
Could break the veil of night
And the Holy Spirit, three in One
I offer you myself, though I’m broken and spent
Let me be Your instrument
Let me be Your instrument
May I understand, to be loved is to love, to be loved is to love
And the Holy Spirit, three in One
I offer you myself, though I’m broken and spent
Let me be Your instrument
Let me be Your instrument
Oh praise Him, Halleluiah
I offer you myself, though I’m broken and spent
Let me be Your instrument
Born again when we die, You have raised us to new life
Let there be peace, pardoned in the pardoning
Born again when we die, You have raised us to new life
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood, as to understand
To be loved, as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
And it’s in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it’s in dying that we are born to Eternal Life
Amen
