“When you sit down to eat, pray. When you eat bread, do so thanking Him for being so generous to you. If you drink wine, be mindful of Him who has given it to you for your pleasure and as a relief in sickness. When you dress, thank Him for His kindness in providing you with clothes. When you look at the sky and the beauty of the stars, throw yourself at God’s feet and adore Him who in His wisdom has arranged things in this way. Similarly, when the sun goes down and when it rises, when you are asleep or awake, give thanks to God, who created and arranged all things for your benefit, to have you know, love and praise their Creator.”
St. Basil the Great
I was just telling someone last night that we are, basically, nothing without God. We are because of God. By that I mean we exist because it is God’s will that we do. We were willed into being by Love, another name for God. He loves us from the moment of our conception.
He loves us no matter what. He may not always be pleased with the things we say and do, or with the things we have not said or done. But God will never stop loving us.
I included above a wonderful prescription from St. Basil the Great. He lived in the 4th century and he was a brilliant Church Father who loved God and his brothers and sisters in Christ. That’s all of us. Anyway, the point of Basil’s words above seems to be a reminder that God not only creates everything, but He sustains it. All of creation exists because God wills it in every millisecond. We are here because God wants us here. The world, the universe – all of it – here because of God’s desire. He does not need any of us or anything we see to be complete, to be content.
God chooses for us to be out of love. It’s the deepest, fullest, highest, widest, most perfect, unfathomable Divine Love. And you should never forget that God loves you that much. He loves each of us that much. Doesn’t matter what you’ve done, or where you come from, or what you look like, or what you struggle with, or how you feel towards God. He loves you through it all. He loves us when we run from Him. He loves us in our blindness that is not our fault and the blindness that we deliberately cause by refusing to look, examine, research, understand.
There is no escaping it. You are loved by the Lord of all Creation. How amazing is that? Below is a song that’s also about God always sustaining the world and what’s in it. When the time comes for us to go, and that time comes for all of us, just know that you can have hope that it’s not the end. Jesus tells us He has overcome the world. It may end, our world may end. But God never will. And He wants us with Him in eternity.
If you haven’t already, consider, please, turning your life over to God now and see what happens. Be amazed. I can pray with you and for you. If you’d like to learn more, a good place to start is the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament of the Bible. Read it slowly, talk to God as you read. That’s all prayer is. I’ll be praying for you!
